WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) hosted the winner of the 2018 Congressional Art Competition in the U.S. Capital and announced the top finalists from New Jersey's First Congressional District.

The first place winner, Joyce Fang of Voorhees, submitted an acrylic painting titled, "Neighborhood" that shows two volunteers beautifying their community. Joyce, an 11th grade student at Eastern Regional High School, says she spent time with her family in the City of Camden to gain inspiration for the piece.

...Representative Donald Norcross, a New Jersey Democrat and member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, attacked the court's claim that the Abood decision violated workers' First Amendment rights, and called the Janus decision a "dangerous precedent."

..."If you applied this decision outside the scope of public unions, government would cease to function," Norcross said. "How many people would stop paying their taxes if we said the First Amendment allowed it?"

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) voted against the Republican's Agriculture and Nutrition Act of 2018 (H.R. 2), also known as the Farm Bill.

"It's outrageous and immoral to cut programs that help feed our nation's children," said Congressman Norcross. "With around 57,000 children struggling to get enough food in South Jersey, it's clear we shouldn't be cutting SNAP benefits and should be raising wages so working men and women can buy groceries and feed their children."

...Rep. Donald Norcross, D-1st Dist., said he was told by the Department of Health and Human Services that there was a two-week waiting period before he would be allowed to visit the children cared for by the Center for Family Services, a social services agency based in Camden.

..."The public's representative has a right to visit these children and make sure they are being treated well and that efforts are being made to reunify them with their families," Norcross said.

...U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross called this "a moment in U.S. history when we have to reflect on who we are and what we stand for."

...Though he has "utmost faith in Center for Family Services," the South Jersey agency housing some migrant children and a widely respected nonprofit, Norcross added that it is still his responsibility as an elected official to verify those children are safe and well cared for.

...Norcross, a member of the Congressional Bipartisan Heroin Task Force, said one person dies of a heroin or opioid overdose each day in New Jersey's 1st Congressional District, which stretches from Cinnaminson past Bridgeport, from Camden down to Winslow.

..."Our cost of doing nothing is in the body counts we see," Norcross noted. "The cost of what we are doing is in the productive lives" that those in recovery are able to lead.

...Norcross says the new memorial will allow everyone in the community to give thanks and remember all the heroes who lost their lives in the line of duty working to keep all of us safe.

..."These are difficult and dangerous jobs ... but in-spite of that you have those around us that are willing to give up their lives so that we as a community can continue," said Norcross.
