Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01), a member of the Workforce Protections Subcommittee of the House Education and Labor Committee, and a co-founder of the Congressional Labor Caucus, called for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) to investigate Amazon over skyrocketing injury rates at its New Jersey warehouses.
"Workplace safety at Amazon's New Jersey warehouses is clearly not a priority, otherwise the rate of injury would be decreasing — not skyrocketing," Norcross said, asking for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to intervene. "I am calling on OSHA to conduct a prompt and comprehensive investigation into the work conditions at Amazon's New Jersey warehouses – and nationwide if needed – to identify deficiencies in Amazon's policy and culture that have led to these harrowing reports."
Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) sent a letter to leaders of the House Appropriations Committee yesterday, requesting they include $368 million in funding for the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS-Ed) appropriations bill for Fiscal Year 2023. The bipartisan letter was signed by 148 of Congressman Norcross's House colleagues.
On Tuesday, Giordano and a number of other industry experts joined U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross (D-1) for a roundtable discussion in Camden. The group praised the state for including the Labor Peace Agreement requirement, and hopes other states will do the same in the future.
Norcross, co-chair of the Congressional Labor Caucus, told Truthout that the increase in funding is crucial to support the current burgeoning labor uprising.
"Our federal budget reflects our national priorities. It documents our values. These past few years have been incredibly tough on the working people of this country, and we've seen thousands organize to push for better wages and better working conditions in the pandemic's wake," Norcross said.
