City officials announced an emergency resurfacing project on Tuesday to repave the roughest portions of 13 city-owned streets before year's end.

Through a county contract, the city has hired Asphalt Pavement Solutions, of Delanco, to handle the repaving work. The city expects to spend $500,000 to finish each of the jobs by Dec. 31.

Interim Mayor Vic Carstarphen announced the repaving program at a press event on Thurman Street in the Liberty Park section. Part of Thurman Street is to be repaved between 9th and 10th streets.

And not every center that's actually open right now is one that parents feel comfortable putting their kids in, Rep. Donald Norcross notes. "People who are not living it presently don't really have a gut-level feeling of what it's like to not have a place to put your child that's affordable, that is reliable, that is safe, nurturing. Your child is everything and that has to work in order for our economy to work," he said.

In 2014, New Jersey voters backed a constitutional amendment to allow judges to order certain criminal suspects be detained without bail and pushed the courts away from holding minor offenders awaiting trial.

Since that measure went into effect in 2017, the number of individuals imprisoned on bail of $2,500 or less while awaiting trial fell to just 14 last year, the New Jersey Judiciary announced Friday. A study conducted in 2012 put the number at more than 1,500, fully 12% of the state's prison population.

A typical New Jersey family of four with one child and one infant in full-time day care would save an estimated $27,000 a year on child care costs under President Joe Biden's proposed spending bill.

That's more than the same family would receive in all but three states, according to the study by the House Education and Labor Committee.

INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF MACHINISTS AND AEROSPACE WORKERS

An amendment championed by the IAM and U.S. Rep. Donald Norcross (D-NJ) that would dramatically increase domestically made procurement requirements in major defense programs has cleared a critical hurdle in Congress.

The IAM, North America's largest aerospace defense union, has been pushing the increase for years in order to strengthen the defense industrial base and domestic supply chain while helping prevent vulnerabilities created by military products being made in China and other countries.
