A provision to raise the minimum wage for Defense Department contractors to $15 per hour, up from $10.95, was adopted into the annual defense policy bill advanced by the House Armed Services Committee on Thursday.
The provision from Rep. Donald Norcross, D-N.J., comes as the Biden administration already plans to incorporate the wage into new contract solicitations starting Jan. 30, 2022, through executive action. The Norcross language included in HASC's draft National Defense Authorization Act follows the same timeline.

The United States Navy's four Iowa-class battleships have been preserved as museum ships, and each survived combat operations in World War II and beyond, but it is time and the elements that have been the greatest threat to the mighty battlewagons.
Efforts continue to restore and maintain the warships for future generations to explore and learn.

Growing up, I enjoyed taking things apart and putting them back together to understand how they work. I loved to work with my hands, so while my three brothers decided to attend traditional four-year colleges, I chose the other four-year school — a Registered Apprenticeship Program. My apprenticeship with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) laid the foundation for me to go from the construction site to Congress. It allowed me to earn-while-I-learned and set me on a path toward a fulfilling, family-sustaining career.

Last year's defense policy bill passed without language championed by Rep. Donald Norcross that would have gradually increased "Buy American" requirements for major defense programs to 100 percent by 2026.
But the New Jersey Democrat, whose proposal faced criticism it would lock out allies, told Defense News in an interview last week that he plans to have the conversation again when this year's National Defense Authorization Act is drafted.
"We have to be prepared that this could go on for some time," Norcross said. "We see $4 now. It's $5.50 a gallon in California. This is a big, big problem, not only to the men and women we represent, but to our economy."

Americans are struggling, and the coronavirus has shed a new light on an issue we have known exists for far too long: workers are underpaid. Many of our essential workers who put their lives on the line each day are earning a wage they cannot live on. The federal minimum wage hasn't been raised in 12 years, the longest stretch in U.S. history! It's unacceptable, which is why we must act now to raise the wage.
