Norcross Calls on Trump to Ask for Sessions’ Resignation
March 2, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to new revelations that Attorney General Jeff Sessions communicated with Russian diplomats at the GOP Convention, then possibly perjured himself in his Senate testimony, Congressman Donald Norcross is calling on President Trump to ask for the attorney general’s resignation.
“The attorney general – the highest law enforcement official in the country, in charge of federal investigators and prosecutors – must be beyond reproach. At the very least, Attorney General Jeff Sessions lied under oath. At the very worst, Sessions could be involved in covering up Russian interference with our election,” Norcross said. “We cannot have an attorney general who is influenced by his own conflicts of interests or a situation where he faces a possible investigation by the FBI, a department he oversees. To restore faith in our nation’s institutions, President Donald Trump must immediately call for Sessions’ resignation.”
Norcross is the only Democrat from New Jersey to serve on the House Armed Services Committee. In January, he called for an investigation into Russian election interference, and, last month, he asked the president to remove Michael Flynn from his position as national security advisor.
“Our intelligence community believes the Russians were responsible for meddling in our elections – and it has now become clear the harm from their interference did not end on election day. Trump’s ongoing and deepening ties to the Russian government are causing the American people to lose trust in this administration and the very institutions that make our country great. We must have an independent investigation into all ties between the Trump campaign and this administration to the Russian government,” Norcross said.
