WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) announced that Rowan University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) has been awarded a $355,900 federal grant by the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

“We’ll only find cures for the deadliest diseases of our time by robustly investing in medical research,” said Congressman Donald Norcross. “I’m proud to announce this grant that’s supporting researchers at Rowan University, where some of the best and brightest medical professionals study, learn and teach. It’s the genetics research of today that will save lives tomorrow.”

“Dr. Temiakov’s research will provide a better understanding of the mitochondria located in human cells which has an important function in energy production and genetics. His research will lead to a better understanding of aging, mitochondrial disease, and age related diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and atherosclerosis,” said Dr. Thomas A. Cavalieri, Dean of Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine. “We are thankful to the NIH in supporting this important research and are grateful to Congressman Norcross for his advocacy on behalf of the residents of New Jersey and the nation.”  

The grant, awarded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, which is part of NIH, will allow researchers at Rowan University to further their work in Pharmacology, Physiology and Biological Chemistry Research. This Rowan SOM research project is being led by Dmitry Temiakov, Ph.D.

Since coming to Congress, Norcross has advocated for research programs and funding for NIH. He also supports programs that helps people suffering from age-related diseases and their families, like the Alzheimer’s Journey Coordinator Certificate Program in South Jersey.
