Washington, DC – Today, Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) will welcome Kaysie Getty from Blackwood, New Jersey for the 4th Annual “Congressional Foster Youth Shadow Day.” Hosted by the Congressional Caucus on Foster Youth, Ms. Getty will join more than 60 foster youth and alumni from across the country to visit Washington and join their representatives for a behind-the-scenes look at Congress.

The bipartisan caucus was formed to provide a dialogue between Members of Congress and the community to develop policy recommendations geared at strengthening the child welfare system and improving the overall well-being of youth and families. Ms. Getty has a full day planned with Congressman Norcross, which includes meetings with constituent groups, staff, and trips to the House floor for votes.

“Sometimes it’s easy to take family for granted, but having met Kaysie and hearing about what incredible odds she has overcome, we are reminded just how important a stable and nurturing home life can be,” said Congressman Donald Norcross.

As a devoted foster youth advocate, Ms. Getty has served as President of the Center for Family Services Internal Youth Advisory Board and Camden County Youth Advisory Board. Ms. Getty now works with the Rutgers School of Social Work as a Youth Advisory Board Ambassador and as a Youth Advocate with the Center for Family Services.

“With more than 420,000 youths in foster care throughout the country, we need more young leaders like Kaysie Getty who have the courage and commitment to stand up and support those in need of a safe, supportive and permanent family,” said Congressman Norcross. “I look forward to working with Ms. Getty and the Caucus on Foster Youth to strengthen our nation’s child welfare services so that those who are vulnerable and in need of care can have every opportunity to succeed.”

Following her time with Congressman Norcross, Ms. Getty  will also attend a “Champions of Change” event at the White House where foster youth and child welfare professionals will be honored.
