CHERRY HILL, NJ – Today, U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) announced that Rutgers University in Camden has been awarded a $452,829 federal Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA) by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS).

The award will provide funding for biological research aimed at improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of diseases.

“Innovative research projects are the first step in improving treatments and finding cures,” said Congressman Donald Norcross. “I am proud to see Rutgers University – Camden, a premier research university in South Jersey, is receiving this type of award that only goes to institutions at the forefront of medical advancements.”

“Congratulations to Dr. Nir Yakoby, an outstanding and innovative scientist, who also is the director of the Center for Computational and Integrative Biology (CCIB),” said Dr. Kriste Lindenmeyer, the Dean of Arts and Sciences at Rutgers University Camden. “Dr. Yakoby and the other scientists in Rutgers University–Camden CCIB are exceptional teachers and cutting-edge researchers doing work that directly applies to advancing research in pharmacology, physiology, and biochemistry.”

Dr. Yakoby’s project is aimed at understanding how changes in signaling molecules modify the role of cells during the developments of embryos.

NIGMS supports research that increases understanding of biological processes and provides a foundation for advancement in the disease diagnoses, treatment and prevention. The Institute also provides training and leadership opportunities for the next generation of scientists.
