Washington, DC-Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today acknowledged new efforts by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to improve the Veterans Choice Program.

While the actions of the VA attempt to ease the burden of veterans receiving care, Rep. Norcross stressed that more must be done for America’s heroes with an option that gives them true choice.

The VA is promising to expand eligibility criteria that would allow more veterans access to private health services. For example, veterans who can’t get a medical appointment within 30 days can now see a private doctor using VA benefits. The changes, effective immediately, also allow veterans to seek out private health care if they live more than 40 miles driving distance from the closest VA medical facility with a full-time primary care physician.

“Today’s announcement by the VA acknowledges ongoing problems with the way care is delivered and highlights the need for reform. But it doesn’t go far enough. I’m leading a bipartisan reform effort that will finally give all our veterans access to care where and when they choose, using their VA benefits—no strings attached. The Veterans Freedom of Health Care Act will remove the VA restrictions that are preventing South Jersey veterans from receiving top quality care in a timely manner,” said Rep. Norcross. “Today’s changes by the VA are a step in the right direction. But in the end, they do little to increase access to the health care our local veterans have earned through service to their country.”

Congressman Norcross’ bill makes veterans choice permanent and expands the program to all veterans, regardless of how far they live from the nearest VA facility. Additionally, the Veterans Freedom of Health Care Act guarantees service for those who wish to receive their health care through the VA system.

“After risking life and limb for our freedom and security, our veterans deserve the opportunity to choose the care that suits them best, and my bill would do just that,” added Rep. Norcross.

The Veterans Freedom of Health Care Act has the support of Democrats, Republicans, local veterans’ organizations and health care providers.
