Washington, DC–Legislation authored by Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) to rename the Deptford, New Jersey Post Office in honor of late Army 1^st Lt. Salvatore Corma, II passed the House Oversight and Reform Committee today.

A native of Deptford in Gloucester County, Corma was 24 years old when he was killed in Afghanistan by an improvised explosive device on April 29, 2010. His actions that day are credited with saving the lives of as many as 19 fellow service members.

“Sal Corma gave his life for his country and his very last actions show his valor and selflessness. Renaming the Deptford Post Office in his memory will remind the people of South Jersey of the sacrifices this young hero made so that we may be free,” said Rep. Norcross.

“I’m honored that Salvatore’s memory is being considered for this special honor. Salvatore’s favorite expression was carpe diem (Latin for “seize the day,” meaning enjoy the present, as opposed to placing all hope in the future). Salvatore cared so much for the service members under his command and accomplishing the mission at hand. So, it’s fitting to name the Deptford Post office in his memory since the unofficial motto of the letter carriers is ‘neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds,’ ” said Corma’s mother, Trudy, of Wenonah.

H.R.3866, the First Lieutenant Salvatore S. Corma, II Post Office Building bill, has the support of New Jersey’s entire Congressional Delegation. Rep. Norcross now urges House leadership to bring the bill to the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives for a full vote.
