WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congressman Donald Norcross released the following statement in reaction to the demolition of the historic Hugg-Harrison-Glover House in Bellmawr:

“The demolition of the Hugg-Harrison-Glover House is an injustice for all those in the community working to save this landmark and a loss for South Jersey history. We’ve been fighting to negotiate a compromise that would preserve this historic building and allow Direct Connection to move forward. I’m deeply disappointed the New Jersey Department of Transportation destroyed the home without warning, despite our ongoing work to save the home.”

The New Jersey Historic Preservation Office confirmed the house was likely connected to William Harrison, Jr., a militia captain who played a historically significant role during critical years of the Revolutionary War. Located along West Browning Road adjacent to New Saint Mary Cemetery in Bellmawr, the house was demolished to create room for a highway infrastructure project known as Direct Connection, designed to reconfigure the Route 42-Interstate 76-Interstate 295 interchange. Congressman Norcross has stood in strong support for the ongoing infrastructure project, but called for a solution to save the historic home.
