Washington, D.C. - 16 days after severe weather struck South Jersey, Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) has just been briefed on efforts to aid storm victims.

“This afternoon, I was informed state officials are preparing a disaster declaration that will be sent to President Obama sometime next week,” said Rep. Norcross.

The declaration would include Camden, Gloucester, Burlington, and Atlantic Counties

The June 23rd storms caused extensive damage, knocking out power to tens of thousands of South Jersey residents. Some were in the dark for nearly a week.

“Without power, our neighbors lived by candlelight and flashlight. Many had to discard food that spoiled from non-working refrigerators and freezers. And without electricity, many couldn’t enjoy basic necessities like hot water,” said Rep. Norcross.

Congressman Norcross applauds the tireless efforts of volunteers and aid workers who manned cooling centers to help victims in the aftermath of the storm. And, Rep. Norcross offered his thanks to local and out-of-state utility workers who worked around the clock to restore power to the affected areas.

Much of the area still bears the scars of the June 23rd storms. Downed trees and limbs are reminders of the straight line winds of 85 miles per hour that tore through parts of the region.

While many have fully recovered, others have not. Municipalities tasked with storm cleanup efforts are left holding the bill from overtime costs of workers assigned to clear debris and keep our communities safe from storm-related hazards.

That’s why Rep. Norcross has called on Governor Christie to issue a disaster declaration, which would give communities in Camden, Gloucester, Burlington, and Atlantic Counties access to federal funds to help them recover financial losses associated with the storm.

“Once Governor Christie issues the disaster declaration, I will work with FEMA and federal officials to ensure our communities get the much-needed assistance they deserve,” said Rep. Norcross.
