Cherry Hill, NJ-Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today announced a $314,025 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services grant to Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM).

“Federal dollars are flowing into our region where the best & brightest minds in science and medicine will use the funding to break new ground to combat disease, and contribute to the longevity and a better quality of life for so many Americans,” said Rep. Donald Norcross.

The grant, awarded by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), will enable Rowan University SOM researchers to expand their work in disease prevention. The Rowan SOM research project is led by Dr. Natalia Shcherbik.

“We are delighted to learn that Dr. Natalia Shcherbik’s grant will be funded by the National Institutes of Health.  The research is focused on the prevention of protein deterioration which is a common pathway for the development of disease and changes often associated with aging.  This research could lead to approaches to health care that potentially could be important in disease prevention and slowing the aging process,” said Thomas A Cavalieri, DO, Dean of Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine. “We are very grateful that the NIH is supporting this important initiative which has great significance in health promotion and disease prevention.  We are also very grateful to Congressman Norcross for his advocacy on behalf of the residents of New Jersey and the nation.”

In his capacity on the House Budget Committee, Rep. Norcross has offered amendments over the last two years that would allocate billions of dollars for the National Institutes of Health for medical research to identify cures for diseases and chronic illnesses.
