Washington, DC-Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today announced a $5,240,424 Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) Grant for the Camden Fire Department. The funds will enable the department to hire 27 full-time firefighters with salary and benefits for the City’s nine fire companies.

"This federal grant will help the Camden Fire Department hire needed personnel and provide the highest level of service to the community when emergencies arise. With new businesses continuing to choose Camden and hire local residents, this funding is more welcome news for the city's turnaround,” said Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01).

“I cannot thank Congressman Norcross and our entire Congressional delegation enough for their commitment and advocacy in Washington, DC on behalf of the City of Camden,” Mayor Dana L. Redd said.  “This new $5.2 million SAFER grant will definitely help strengthen our fire department by allowing us to hire additional personnel.  Keeping our families safe will always be a top priority and I will continue to seek solutions that will enhance public safety in Camden.”

Camden Fire Department Chief Michael Harper says the addition of 27 full-time firefighters will bring the Camden Fire Department up to full staff of 196 career firefighters.

“These new firefighters will be a wonderful addition to our Department. We haven’t hired any new firefighters since 2006—for 10 years. It’s always nice to have a breath of fresh air with new energy from new firefighters who are eager to serve the City of Camden,” said Camden Fire Department Chief Michael Harper.

This year alone, Rep. Donald Norcross has successfully supported nearly $6 million in federal government grant awards for eight Southern New Jersey Fire Departments.
