Washington, DC-Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today announced a $1.1 million U.S. Department of Labor grant for the Housing Authority of the City of Camden for its YouthBuild program.

“I visited YouthBuild Camden last year with U.S. Labor Secretary Tom Perez. We saw first-hand the program putting students on the right track. They were learning in the classroom, and they were working with their hands. I saw the satisfaction and sense of accomplishment on their faces. This program is great investment in the futures of the students of South Jersey,” said Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01).

The YouthBuild Camden grant is part of an $80.3 million U.S. Department of Labor award to provide second chance opportunities at education and career training to at-risk youth, ages 16-24, at 77 YouthBuild programs in 35 states.

For the first time in YouthBuild’s history, funding has been awarded to communities designated as federal Promise Zones, which includes the City of Camden.

“I thank Congressman Norcross for his unwavering support to Camden and her residents,” Mayor Dana L. Redd said.  “This grant truly supports the great work already being carried out through the YouthBuild program while also building upon the success of other career readiness initiatives currently being offered to residents.”

The grants announced today will help approximately 5,000 at-risk youth complete high school or state equivalency degree programs, earn industry-recognized certifications within in-demand occupations, and gain construction skills training to build housing for low-income or homeless individuals and families in their communities.
