Congressman Norcross Appointed to Democratic Leadership Committee
January 25, 2017
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) announced today that has been re-appointed by leader Nancy Pelosi to the House Democratic Steering and Policy Committee as a representative for working families. The committee shapes and implements the party’s agenda, advises the Caucus on important issues and assigns members to committees.
“The 2016 election showed it’s more important than ever that the Democratic party fights for working-class Americans. Serving on the Steering and Policy Committee is an opportunity to help shape our party’s agenda in Congress on issues important to South Jersey and working families. On the committee, I’ll continue to fight for good jobs, affordable education alternatives, safe neighborhoods and a strong, secure nation,” Norcross said. “I sincerely thank the caucus leadership and my fellow colleagues for their support and faith in me as I take on this new and important role in the 115th Congress.”
The appointment shows Democratic leadership recognizes the need to appeal to working-class families, and that Norcross has a long-established record of defending America’s workers. An International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) member and electrician by trade, Norcross has a long history of fighting for workers in South Jersey. He served as business agent, where he fought day in and day out to ensure workers had jobs, as an assistant business manager for IBEW Local 351 and as president of the Southern New Jersey AFL-CIO. In the state legislature, he led the fight to make college more affordable and expanded access to higher education in South Jersey by creating partnerships with community colleges and state universities.
And in his first term in Congress, Norcross built a reputation as a national leader on labor issues. He introduced legislation that would incrementally raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, fought the Trans-Pacific Partnership and formed the bipartisan Building Trades Caucus, which is bringing Republicans and Democrats together to educate members on the unique nature of policies that affect the building trades.
In the 114th Congress, Rep. Norcross was unanimously chosen by the Democratic Caucus as the Steering & Policy Committee Freshman Co-Representatives. He also serves on House Armed Services Committee, the Education and Work Committee, and as an assistant whip.
