National Security
We must do everything we can to ensure service members, veterans, and their families are cared for in return for their service to our country. Proper defense budgeting ensures our soldiers are best equipped to get the job done. Maintaining the readiness of our military also ensures our national defense. Supporting South Jersey’s Joint Base McGuire–Dix–Lakehurst not only supports our national security needs, but it also employs 44,000 civilians and military personnel.
I also have a personal commitment to the unbreakable bond between the United States and Israel, our closest ally in the Middle East and the region’s only democracy. I am proud to serve on the Armed Services Committee to ensure our military, allies, and strategic partners can meet domestic and security threats to our shared democratic values.
More on National Security
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Rep. Donald Norcross (D-NJ-01) released the following statement upon the Senate's passing of bipartisan defense legislation, the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2022 (FY22 NDAA), that strengthens America's security and meets the needs of our servicemembers, veterans and military families. This robust bill bolsters pay and improves benefits for servicemembers, combats sexual assault in the military, and modernizes our defense technology. The bill first passed through the House on December 7.
Norcross, chair of the Armed Services tactical air and land forces subcommittee, said the measure "strengthens our national defense by ensuring our military personnel, their families, and the companies in the South Jersey region that supported them are bolstered by increasing pay and funding vital jobs and research that improves the survivability of our troops in combat."
The COVID-19 pandemic exposed how a global superpower becomes critically vulnerable when it depends on foreign nations to manufacture basic components, such as semiconductors, that are vital to the daily life of every American.
A nation that once led the world in manufacturing semiconductors watched helplessly this fall as General Motors temporarily shut down production at North American auto plants because the deadly pandemic decimated the overseas factories that our country now relies on to produce the chips that power nearly every device we use with an on and off switch.
Rep. Don Norcross, D-Camden, was a passenger on one of the planes that landed at the Joint Base. He had been visiting the Boeing plant in Seattle where the planes were constructed.
"We knew they needed a new refueler to replace the KC-10 and this one can do so much more than refueling," said Norcross, who also serves on the House Armed Services Committee and is chair of its Tactical Air and Land Forces subcommittee.
The U.S. Senate is now considering an amendment from Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.) which would grow our industrial base and help give thousands of working Americans the chance to improve their lives. The "Buy American" amendment would also increase the number of domestic manufacturers throughout the country. I applaud the members of the U.S. House of Representatives who voted in favor of this amendment, which was introduced by Rep. Donald Norcross (D-N.J.).
"A new era officially begins today," Commissioner Deputy Director Dan O'Connell, who represented the county at the Joint Base's official arrival ceremony for the first new plane, said in the statement. "These state-of-the-art supertankers will help safeguard our nation, and they will do it based here at our county's amazing mega-base. It's a monumental day and I want to thank all those who played a part in bringing these jets to Burlington County, especially our two congressmen, Andy Kim and Donald Norcross."
