CHERRY HILL, NJ – Today, U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) announced that Rowan University’s School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) has been awarded a $304,510 federal grant by the Department of Health and Human Services Administration (HHS) to provide assistance to an Area Health and Education Center (AHEC) in Camden. The grant will allow hundreds of New Jersey students to properly train for primary care careers in rural and underserved areas.

"We need to make sure all New Jerseyans and Americans – no matter where they live – have access to well-trained medical professionals," said Congressman Donald Norcross. "This grant will expand educational opportunities, as well as health services, in our area. I am always glad to see and support institutions – like colleges and medical centers – working together to best help our communities."

"We are pleased to hear that the New Jersey Area Health Education Center Program (AHEC) will be funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It provides us with the opportunity to train medical students and other health professionals about the special needs of the underserved with an ultimate goal of preparing physicians to serve in medically underserved areas in New Jersey," said Dr. Thomas A. Cavalieri, Dean of Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine. "We are grateful for the ongoing support of Congressman Norcross in his effort to enhance the quality of healthcare for the citizens of our state."

The grant was awarded by HHS’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and the center in Camden is operated by the New Jersey AHEC program. In 1978, AHECs around the country were created as part of a national initiative to improve the health in various communities through educational partnerships.
