Cherry Hill, NJ – Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) announced today that South Jersey will receive $158,700 in federal aid to help veterans and their families transition out of homelessness and into permanent housing.

The funding, awarded jointly by the Departments of Housing & Urban Development (HUD) and Veterans Affairs (VA), will be used to provide rental assistance to 24 local homeless veterans and their families. The boost in federal aid comes by way of the HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) Program, which combines rental assistance from HUD with case management and clinical services provided by VA. The award will be administered by the Camden Housing Authority in conjunction with the Philadelphia VA Medical Center to ensure these services reach local veterans in need.

“Our veterans fought with dignity to overcome the enemy – it’s beyond time that we extend that same dignity and help veterans in need overcome their challenges here at home,” said Congressman Donald Norcross. “Helping veterans and their families back on their feet and putting a roof over their heads is not just the decent thing to do, it’s our responsibility as citizens of this country and beneficiaries of their bravery.”

The $158,700 grant is South Jersey’s second award in recent weeks issued to combat veteran homelessness. Just last month the Volunteers of America-Delaware Valley, Inc. (VOA) received a $150,000 federal grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide homeless veterans with job training so they may successfully transition into sustainable housing and quality employment.
