CHERRY HILL, NJ – U.S. Congressman Donald Norcross (NJ-01) released the following statement today on the recently-secured $630 million contract secured for the Philly Shipyard:

“This new shipbuilding contract is a major win for South Jersey and the Philadelphia region, and it is truly welcome news for all of us who have supported the effort for years,” said Congressman Norcross. “This work will generate jobs for over a thousand skilled workers during these difficult times. I’ll continue to work closely with the Maritime Administration, Philly Shipyard officials and our partners in labor to grow our workforce and bring new opportunities to the region.”

The $630 million contract was awarded to Philly Shipyard for the construction of a fleet of U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) National Security Multi-Mission Vessels from TOTE Services, LLC (TOTE). The contract, which will bring an estimated 1,200 jobs back to the region, supports non-recurring engineering and detail design of the National Security Multi-Mission Vessels (NSMV), as well as procurement of equipment and materials and construction of the first two ships. If all five ships are ordered and built in series, then the total contract value of the 5 ship program would be approximately $1.5 billion.

Norcross worked closely with Congresswoman Mary Gay Scanlon (PA-05), whose district houses the Philly Shipyard, last year, advocating for Philadelphia with leadership at the Department of Transportation (DOT), including Secretary Elaine Chao and Rear Admiral Mark H. Buzby, and members of the Administration.

The vessels will serve critical national security interests and other important roles, including missions in support of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief throughout the world. To meet this requirement, the vessels will also have roll/on-roll/off and container storage capacity, as well as a helicopter landing pad.
