Washington, DC – Last night, Congressman Norcross voted to increase access to quality care for veterans who are unable to live independently. Entitled the Long-Term Care Veterans Choice Act, the legislation authorizes the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to partner with long-term medical care providers to help veterans in need. Congressman Norcross cosponsored the bipartisan measure, which was approved by the full House of Representatives. 

The bill provides that the VA, starting October 1st, may pay for up to 900 veterans to live and obtain care in non-departmental adult care homes. Eligible facilities must meet VA standards in providing non-institutional, long-term, supportive care for veterans who are unable to live independently and prefer a family setting. 

“As veterans of our nation’s Greatest Generation are aging, we must be prepared to provide them with the care they need and the dignity they deserve,” said Congressman Norcross. “For many, this means providing quality long-term care, and by allowing the VA to seek more alternatives – as opposed to costly and sometimes unnecessary nursing homes – we can improve the level of care our veterans receive and help them maintain their quality of life.”
