Congressman Norcross Fighting for Workers
February 1, 2017
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Donald Norcross (D-NJ) is drawing a line in the sand and taking a stand against the so-called National “Right to Work” Act introduced by Representative Steve King (R-IA), today. Norcross, a former IBEW electrician and union leader, is criticizing the legislation and working to rally Democrats and Republicans against the anti-worker bill.
“This bill is an attack on American workers in all 50 states. It will cut wages and make retirement less secure for millions of workers,” Congressman Norcross said. “I’ve spent my life fighting for working families, first as an IBEW business agent and now as a Congressman. Workers want the dignity of a good job, a safe workplace, and a decent paycheck. We should be fighting to support them – but this anti-worker bill would make those goals harder to reach for every family.”
Studies show simply living in a right-to-work state reduces pay for both union and non-union workers by an average of $1,500 a year. Attacking workers also results in less job security, unsafe workplaces and fewer benefits, like health insurance and pensions.
“Just as there is a clear link between the strength of worker’s voices and the growth of America’s middle class – there’s a clear link between a decline in those voices and the breakdown of the American dream. Studies show workers in these states make $1,500 less on average – that’s money taken from their paychecks and given to corporate CEOs,” Norcross said. “Congress should focus on creating jobs, raising wages and protecting workers – this bill does the exact opposite.”
