Press Releases

Camden, NJ-Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today announced a $1.875 million U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS Office) Hiring Program (CHP) grant for the Camden County Police Department. The Department will utilize the grant award to hire 15 new officers.

“This funding will enable the Camden County Police Department to continue its mission of being a national example of community policing at its best, just as President Obama remarked when he visited Camden City last year. I know that under the leadership of Chief J. Scott Thomson, the Camden County Police Department will continue to make critical connections with our neighbors and build a lasting trust among community members to make Camden safer for its residents and visitors,” said Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01).

Camden’s award is part of $119 million in COPS grants awarded to 184 law enforcement agencies across the United States, announced by U.S. Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch. The funds will help those agencies create, and in some cases protect, more than 900 law enforcement positions.

"Community policing is the bedrock from which we have built an organizational culture to make our neighborhoods safer. This grant enables us to put 15 more mentors and guardians in the community of Camden. We are extremely appreciative to the COPS Office, the Department of Justice and Congressmen Norcross for helping us to increase our capacity to deliver safe streets,” said Camden County Police Department Chief J. Scott Thomson.

President Obama visited Camden in May 2015, calling the City “a symbol of promise for the nation," and had high praise for the Camden County Police Department’s community policing program. To read Rep. Norcross’ statement from the President’s 2015 visit to Camden, click here.
