Washington, D.C. – Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today was informed that the State of New Jersey has formally submitted a request for federal disaster aid for the June 23rd storms that left widespread damage across Gloucester, Camden, Burlington, and Atlantic Counties.

In the aftermath of the storms, Rep. Norcross urged Governor Chris Christie to issue a disaster declaration, which would enable local municipalities saddled with the costs associated with storm cleanup to receive federal funding assistance.

“19 days after the storms left a path of destruction and knocked out power for hundreds of thousands of South Jersey residents, we can now move forward, working with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and other federal offices to ensure financial aid is delivered to local governments that desperately need the help,” said Rep. Norcross.

Mayor George W. Shivery, Jr.  of hard hit Greenwich Township, Gloucester County issued this statement to Rep. Norcross’ office today:  “It’s great news. It’s been a little bit of a time coming. We need the federal help.”

The June 23rd storms packed winds in excess of 85 miles-per-hour in some areas, downing trees and power lines, leaving thousands of people without electricity for days. There was extensive damage to homes and cars.

Utility crews from the region and from out of state worked around the clock to restore power for residents and businesses.

Rep. Norcross visited the area shortly after the storms to assess the damage and called on state leaders to take immediate action to seek out federal assistance.
