Cherry Hill, NJ-Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today announced a $218,379 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for Rutgers University-Camden to study poverty in U.S. metropolitan areas.
"This grant from the National Science Foundation establishes a scientific, fact-based approach to analyzing a complex social issue and can provide insight to better understand the circumstances that contribute to poverty and how we can lift people up in society,” said Rep. Donald Norcross.
The grant will enable Rutgers-Camden researchers to examine variables that factor into the poverty equation, including housing & income inequality, race, ethnicity, and neighborhood analysis in both urban and suburban communities that comprise U.S. metropolitan areas.
The research will be led by Dr. Paul Jargowsky, Professor of Public Policy and Director of the Center for Urban Research & Urban Education at Rutgers-Camden.
“As a world-class research university, Rutgers University–Camden has a special commitment to applying its original thinking and new ideas toward the issues that challenge our state and our nation,” says Phoebe A. Haddon, chancellor of Rutgers University–Camden. “We applaud Dr. Paul Jargowsky for securing this highly competitive research funding from the National Science Foundation, which will allow him to pursue this important work. Rutgers University–Camden’s faculty consistently succeed in securing national funding support from agencies such as the NSF, and we are proud to attract these research dollars to South Jersey.”
“This funding is critical to researchers at Rutgers-Camden, who I know will work diligently to study and identify the underlying factors behind poverty and how we can collectively work to reverse trends, policies, and decisions that contribute to poverty in the United States,” said Rep. Donald Norcross. “I look forward to reviewing the findings of the Rutgers-Camden investigators when they’ve concluded their research. I’ll take their insight with me to Washington, DC as I continue to advocate for policies that directly address poverty in the United States.”
