Washington, DC-Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01) today announced a $483,000 U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS)/National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant for Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) for Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biological Chemistry Research as it relates to Mitochondrial Disease.

“This critical funding from the federal government will help our South Jersey-based researchers dig deeper into the complexities as they work to understand and treat Mitochondrial Disease. This disease affects many children and families across our region and the entire United States, and it is imperative that we continue to fund research so one day we can find a cure,” said Rep. Donald Norcross (NJ-01).

The Rowan SOM project receiving the federal grant award is led by researcher, Dr. Michael Henry.

“The information derived from this study could help to identify the underlying cause of Mitochondrial Disease, a devastating disorder of childhood affecting 1 in 4,000 under the age of 10.  Dr. Henry’s discovery, as a result of this grant, could result in a major breakthrough leading to the prevention or treatment of Mitochondrial Disease,” said Thomas A. Cavalieri, D.O., Dean of Rowan SOM. “We are very grateful to the NIH in supporting this important initiative which has the potential to improve the quality of life of children and their families.  We also extend our appreciation to Congressman Norcross for his advocacy on behalf of the residents of New Jersey and the nation.”
